Pownce = Twitter + Tumblr + Divshare?

Thanks to Ryan Stewart, I got an invite to the long rumored Kevin Rose startup, called Pownce. I have been playing around with it for some time and it is pretty interesting. As per their claim, you can send stuff with Pownce. You could pass on a quick note to your friend or share photos, music, etc. As soon as I checked it out, the first thing that came to my mind was that Pownce is a combination of features in Twitter, Tumblr and Divshare. I just thought that I will share my first thoughts on this new app with TechBizMedia readers.

There are a few basic differences between Pownce and the highly rated Twitter.

  • Unlike Twitter, you are not restricted by the number of characters
  • You can gtroup friends into sets
  • You can send private messages to a group of friends or just one. Unlike twitter, you don’t have to share all your messages in public.
  • Unlike Twitter, you can update from IM or Text Messages. You can only use their website or their software (built on AIR framework).

Pownce allows you to post your notes, links and events in public but you cannot share your files to public. You can upload files with a maximum size of 10 MB in the free version. You can also upgrade to a pro version for $20 a year and upload files with sizes upto 100 MB. Any audio file uploaded to Pownce can be played from the website itself, using an embedded player. Pownce is trying to become a one stop shop for many of your social networking tasks. It is meant to replace Twitter, Tumblr and Divshare in your social(networking) life. But I am apprehensive about the usefulness of Pownce in the current Facebook world. They have a long way to go before they become a Twitter/Jaiku killer. I am skeptical about seeing a major shift from Twitter/Jaiku to Pownce because people are slowly getting bored with the process of establishing a network of friends every time a new social network app is released.

  2. I don’t have an invite yet, but I did check out what I could. I share your concerns and questions. It does look well designed, but will it replace Facebook+Twitter?

  3. My account is not showing up invites yet. I will share it as soon as I get one.

    @mndoci: I don’t think it can replace Facebook+Twitter combo.

  4. I would love an invite if and when any become available to you. I’m pretty stoked to see how it compares to the existing offerings.

    Additionally, thanks for the valuable comparisons to Twitter. It will be interesting to see if the star power among the web-twenty community in the co-founders will be enough alone to push it past it’s competition. Buzz never hurt anyone, irrespective of how good the product was vs. alternatives (a la Zooomr).

  5. Good write up on Pownce. There seems to be some good and some questionable reviews out there right now. I think that it will be a success. Kevin has the power and money from Digg to support his ventures now.

    I know that you will have a lot of people asking, but if you do get an invite I would love to have one.

    Thanks
