A good sidekick

Portfolio.com, like everyone else, is carrying a story on Yahoo. But this post is not about Terry Semel. There is enough discussion on that subject out on the web, but the following caught my eye (boldemphasis mine)
Still, Elinor Mills of CNET.news com says that analysts, former Yahoo employees and others agree Yang is the right executive to lead Yahoo but only with Sue Decker as his No.2. Indeed some speculate that Decker, who was named president on Monday, is being readied to take over the reins of Yahoo.
Of course, this situation is not new for Yang, but looking at it more generally, whenever you start a company, it is rare that the founder(s) have the experience or skill set to build a sustainable business by themselves. Passion and technological prowess, while essential, only takes you so far. What happens when you hit the wall? When you need to understand your markets? It is critical that you build a team where the skills and needs are complimentary and consistent with the company’s DNA. The latter point is as important as anything else. While you might find someone whose skills, on paper, are ideal for the company, does the person fit in with the company culture? When you bring in managers who make significant changes to company ethos, even a big company like 3M can go through an identity crisis.
